Scribe Post 2/2/2012 Evolution in Populations

Hello Class!

Today in Class we covered:
  • What Darwin Didn't see worksheet w/ Video
  • Pages 19-22 in the notes-packet

Notes Packet pg. 19

2 types of populations in evolution.
  • Evolving
  • Non evolving

Micro Evolution - Evolution on a small scale

Here is a example of evolving populations in slight combination with micro evolution

(we all know Darwin loved his Finches)

Genetic Drift

This concept is well explained in the video below.

Page 20

Two types of genetic drift.

  • Bottleneck
  • The Founder Effect

Both of these terms are explained very clearly, and with good detail in this video.

Gene Flow :the continuation of Micro Evolution

Gene Flow - a population may gain or loose alleles by genetic exchange with another population.

The details of gene flow are explained well in the video below.

Mutations - change in an organisms DNA

Page 22.

Natural Selection - a blend of chance and sorting

  • Those that work best in the environment leave the most offspring and have a disproportionate impact on the gene pool.

The flowing video explains the principals of natural selection

Only watch 2:10 to 3:45 (the rest is an argument with creationist theorists)

  1. Sidd,
This was a good post. The videos actually helped me understand some of the key topics we discussed in class!
I wish you had a video about the effects of natural selection (Directional, Disruptive, and Sustaining). That may have helped because that topic was a bit confusing at first... It would have also been helpful if you would have given a succinct summary of the videos before I watched a video about something I already understood...
    Otherwise great job and thanks!

  2. Sidd,
Good post! The videos and and pictures were a really good reinforcement of the material we learned in class.
But, I agree with Sophia. You should explain the videos in bullet points.
Like for the bottleneck and founder effect, I agree that they're well explained in the video, but a quick definition would have made it more clear.
    Thanks,
    Melissa

  3. Sidd-

Nice post! You used some really good videos that help me visualize exactly what the notes meant. Also, like what Melissa and Sophia said, it would be a good to not just label the videos but also explain them. This would really help some people who don't learn as well from watching thing and need to read about them. Other than that I liked your use of color to make things stand out and the way you organized your post was very good.

    Good job!
